As OneRepublic’s frontman and key songwriter, Tedder was also presented with the extremely rare Diamond Award certification for their hit “Counting Stars” by RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier with NMPA President and CEO David Israelite. He now holds more certifications than any other NMPA Icon, with a total of 27 Gold & Platinum verified hits.
In a powerful acceptance speech, Tedder spoke on the importance of songwriters to society in relation to songwriters’ rights — as well as his unexpected political advocacy with the NMPA. “I don’t particularly consider myself an icon,” Tedder said. “Not to disparage any other artists who refer to themselves as icons, it’s just an odd thing to refer to yourself [as] — but I deeply appreciate the association, recognizing my work in the studio as well as on Capitol Hill. I definitely didn’t plan on getting into politics, and it happened — it happened so quickly.”
“On top of being a record-breaking songwriter, artist and producer, Ryan Tedder is an activist,” said Israelite. “Last year he proved to be one of the most vocal and impactful forces behind the passage of the Music Modernization Act. Quite honestly, we couldn’t have done it without him, and we all owe him a debt not just for his songwriting but also for his advocacy on behalf of all people who make music.”
Tedder also performed some of his most recognizable songs and shared the stories behind their creation, including this year’s number one Jonas Brothers smash “Sucker,” Beyoncé’s “Halo,” Adele’s “Rumour Has It,” and “Counting Stars.”
